Firefighters battle grass fire in Northeast Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - UPDATE (4:36 p.m.): Bakersfield College said its campus will reopen Monday morning for regular business hours.

UPDATE (4:11 p.m.): Bakersfield College says if you're picking up a student from the Panorama campus, to do it at the southeast parking lot near Christmas Tree Lane and Mount Vernon Avenue

UPDATE (4 p.m.): Bakersfield Fire Department said the fire at the Panorama bluffs has burned about 100 acres and one person was treated for smoke inhalation.

Bakersfield Fire Department Batt. Chief John Frando said the fire is mostly under control from its west end but continue to work on it from the east. 

He also added wind and steep terrain made their efforts a little more difficult.

The fire was reported to the fire department just before 3 p.m.

UPDATE (3:30 p.m.): Bakersfield College said it closed its Panorama campus of smoke from the grass fire nearby. 

College officials ask people on campus to avoid its north side and to leave the campus using exits at Memorial Stadium or at Mount Vernon and University avenues.

Crews have blocked off Panorama Drive between Haley Street and Mount Vernon.

Firefighters are working to put out a grass fire near the bluffs in Northeast Bakersfield Thursday afternoon.

Crews are working on the fire near Panorama Drive and Haley Street near Bakersfield College.
