UPDATE: Man killed in Hwy. 99 collision identified

UPDATE (7/22): The Kern County Coroner has identified the person killed in the crash as 72-year-old Van Nuys resident Vardges Aramovich Arakelian.


UPDATE (7/13): One person was killed and another was injured in yesterday’s four-vehicle collision, according to the CHP.

The department said a Ford was heading southbound on Highway 99 in the construction bypass lane, stopped for traffic, while a Toyota and Honda that were behind the vehicle were slowing due to the stopped traffic. A Dodge failed to slow for the stopped traffic ahead and struck the rear of the Honda.

That pushed the Honda into the rear of the Toyota, which pushed into the rear of the Ford, according to the CHP. All vehicles came to rest blocking the construction bypass lane.

The driver of the Dodge, a 72-year-old Van Nuys resident, suffered fatal injuries in the collision. The driver of the Honda was taken to Kern Medical for treatment of minor injuries. The drivers of the Toyota and Ford were uninjured, according to the CHP.


(7/12): BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The California Highway Patrol is reporting a fatal crash on southbound Highway 99, near Rosedale Highway.

The crash happened around 6:21 p.m. Monday evening, according to CHP’s Traffic Incident Information Page.
