Deadly crash reported on Highway 99 south of Highway 223

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The California Highway Patrol is reporting a deadly crash on southbound Highway 99, south of Highway 223, where a vehicle went off the roadway and hit a tree.

The crash happened around 8 a.m.

A preliminary report from the California Highway Patrol said that one vehicle was traveling southbound on Highway 99 at a high rate of speed in fast lane. The vehicle veered to the right and off the road, lost control and hit a tree on the left side of the road.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The front right passenger of that vehicle suffered major injuries and was taken to Kern Medical Hospital for treatment.

It is unknown whether drugs or alcohol played a factor in this crash.
