A settlement has been reached in a wrongful death lawsuit against Kern County filed by the family of a motorcyclist killed in a crash with a Kern County Sheriff’s Office deputy.
The county settled the lawsuit with the family of Larry Maharrey for a total $3.8 million.
Maharrey and a deputy collided with a Kern County Sheriff’s Office deputy on July 14, 2015. Maharrey was riding a motorcycle when the crash occurred at the intersection of Airport Drive and Norris Road.
The deputy involved was driving through the intersection with lights and sirens while responding to a call, according to the CHP.
Video released from the crash showed Maharrey had a green light on Airport Drive while the deputy was facing a left turn arrow.
Maharrey’s widow Paula filed the lawsuit claiming sheriff’s office does not follow policy designed to protect the public.
The Kern County Board of Supervisors approved the settlement last week.
