A Bakersfield resident was arrested by Border Patrol agents in Arizona Monday after being accused of attempting to bring two immigrants illegally to the U.S.

U.S. Customs and Border Patrol said they arrested a 31-year-old Mexican national — who was living in Bakersfield — at an immigration checkpoint along Interstate 8 near Wellton, Arizona.

Officials did not release the Bakersfield man’s name.

Officials said a border patrol K-9 inspected a Ford Fusion and alerted agents at around 9:30 a.m. The agents found two men lying on the rear passenger floorboard. The men entered the U.S. illegally, border officials said.

CBP arrested the 31-year-old man for human smuggling and charged the two other men with illegal re-entry.
