Bakersfield College students program robots with school spirit

News

Bakersfield College students are showing school spirit through a robot.

Just in time for Homecoming, the college students are showing off a robot they programmed to be a Renegade football fan.

The students in the industrial automation program named the robot Pepper. The robot stands at 4 feet, 5 inches tall and can see, hear and move all five fingers.

Pepper can also respond to select questions. Pepper even knows all the words to the BC fight song.

The students are currently programming Pepper to wave banners to say “Touchdown, Renegades!”

“I’m looking forward to a lot of touchdowns scored by Bakersfield College so that these robots can get into the swing of things and help cheer everyone on,” engineering professor Manny Fernandez said.

The students are hoping Pepper will bring more attention to the industrial automation bachelors program which trains them for technical management careers, especially in manufacturing, energy and agriculture.

The robots will be at Saturday’s Homecoming game against East L.A. College at Memorial Stadium at 6 p.m.
