To help local veterans, Bakersfield College broke ground on the Vernon Valenzuela Veterans Resource Center Monday morning.

The groundbreaking kicked off BC Veteran’s Week 2018, a celebration for all who have served in the armed forces.

The new resource center is named for Valenzuela, who served in Vietnam and went on to work with BC student-veterans. He passed away in 2012.

The facility is the first project to be funded after Measure J, a $502 million bond, passed in 2016.

It will serve as a study lounge with computer access, and most importantly, it will be a place to network and foster community with fellow veteran students.
