17 News Chief Meteorologist Alissa Carlson was crowned Mrs. California in Palm Springs Saturday, and will go on to compete for the title of Mrs. America in August.

The Mrs. America pageant has been “celebrating the uniqueness of the married woman, her family, and community,” for the past 39 years, according to organizers.

Carlson – who also won the award for best interview at this weekend’s event – is now slated to compete with 50 other representatives, from every state and Washington, D.C., August 25 at the Westgate Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

The winner of August’s competition will be crowned Mrs. America by 2017’s winner, Mekayla Eppers.

The Mrs. America pageant began in 1979, honoring “the most poised, versatile, articulate and beautiful married women” from across the country, organizers said.
