Starting this week, Kern County Animal Services is operating on holiday hours.
The closures mean the shelter won’t be accepting strays. The only officers on duty will be there for emergency services only through the after hours dispatch line.
That includes injuries, police assistance, life threatening situations, or animals that need to be put down.
“An officer can respond if it’s an emergency response, but other than that the shelter’s going to be closed,” Kern County Animal Services director Nick Cullen said.
“It’s going to be hard on everyone — including us. We care very much about the county’s animals and we want to be here to care for them.”
The shelter will be closed Friday, Dec. 22. It will only be open Saturday Dec. 23, and Saturday Dec. 30.
Full operations return after New Year’s on Jan. 2.
