Kern Animal Services is hoping for a grant that would save kittens from being put down, by sending them to prison.
It’s called the Lerdo Inmate Orphan Nursery.
County animal services hopes to take that pitch to a top three spot in a national competition.
Animal Services says because underaged kittens need extra care, it makes it hard to find them new homes. But instead of being euthanized, inmates at Lerdo can care for them, and learn skills they can use when they’re released.
Animal Services is competing in the 2018 Innovation Showdown, where they could win a $350,000 grant.
