The Kern County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a telephone scam involving someone claiming to be a deputy demanding payment of a fine over missing jury duty.

KCSO said Thursday it began investigating reports of the scam. Officials said someone claiming to be a sheriff’s deputy told residents they missed jury duty, have a warrant or have an unpaid fine and threatens arrest if they did not pay the fine over the phone.

The sheriff’s office says it would never demand payments over the telephone and would not ask for fines to be paid using any specific method.

KCSO reminds the public to never provide anyone with money payments or personal information over the telephone.
