Kern County firefighters battled a compost fire Monday morning at the Metropolitan Recycling Facility in South Bakersfield.

Flames broke out just just before 5 a.m. at the center on S. Mount Vernon Avenue just off Highway 58.

Kern County firefighters on scene say a pile of wood chips is burning, but crews say they’re having trouble getting the upper hand on those flames because of the wind.

No word on what started the fire.
