Friday Update (6:30 a.m.) Kern County Fire Department battled a fire at Kern Oil and Refining in the 7700 block of East Panama Lane just north of Lamont Thursday night around 9:00.

KCFD officials said the cause of the fire in a cooling tower is unknown. Officials waited for the substance inside to burn itself out. Fire officials said they were able to shut off the source of the fire.

KCFD Engineer Matt Redstone said they could not determine what was burning inside the tower.

Kern County Public Health responded and monitored air and did not get any negative readings inside the refinery, they said.

Health officials said the unit was shut down and will be inspected by agencies this morning.

No injuries to employees. Investigation on going.
