A teen was booked into juvenile hall after an armed carjacking in the La Cresta neighborhood of Northeast Bakersfield.
On Wednesday night around 11:35 p.m., Bakersfield Police Department was called out to Loma Linda Drive and Panorama Drive regarding an armed carjacking.
The suspect allegedly approached two people and brandished a firearm. He demanded personal property, keys and then fled in one of the victim’s cars, a red Hyundai with paper plates, according to Bakersfield PD.
A Kern County Sheriff’s Office helicopter was dispatched and located the suspect a few blocks away near Haley Street and Highway 178, according to police. The victim abandoned the car, took off on foot and attempted to hide in a garage in the 1700 block of Bower Street.
Bakersfield police officers surrounded the garage and evacuated residents, according to police.
The male juvenile surrendered after several minutes, police said. Police located a gun and the victims’ remaining stolen property inside the garage.
The suspect was booked into juvenile hall for carjacking, robbery, gang-related charges and resisting arrest.
