JJ’s Legacy won a Rose Parade award for design for this year’s “Donate Life” float.
The float was awarded the Judge’s Trophy for outstanding float design at the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena on Tuesday.
The float’s theme was “rhythm of the heart” honoring those who have been touched by the power of organ, eye and tissue donation. The float also featured exotic flowers from around the world as well as musical instruments, masks and head dresses from from different African nations.
It featured a floragraph depicting deceased Bakersfield organ donor Jacob Mendiola.
Mendiola, who was born with Down syndrome, died in 2014 at age 14.
His family made the choice to donate Mendiola’s heart, kidneys and tissue, to then be given to deserving recipients.
It’s the eight year, JJ’s Legacy is a co-sponsor of the “Donate Life’ float.
