Work on a project to secure the Lake Isabella Dam broke ground Tuesday morning.

The U.S.. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District held a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of much-needed repairs on the Isabella Lake dams.

The repairs come after a 2006 safety modification study that addressed seismic and seepage issues.

Last September, the corps allotted $204 million for the main and auxiliary dams’ modifications.

Construction crews plan to raise the main and auxiliary dams up to 16 feet higher as well as add filters, drains and a new 300-foot wide emergency spillway.

The project is scheduled to be completed in 2022.
