Immigration rights activists stage protest at Rep. Valadao’s Hanford home

In Hanford, members of an immigrant rights group that interrupted an appearance by Rep. Kevin McCarthy, staged a protest outside the home of Rep. David Valadao.

Proetesters from the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights, CHIRLA, chanted “Valadao, listen, we’re fighting for our cause.”

They say while the Hanford Republican has publicly supported comprehensive immigration reform in the past, his words are not reflected in his actions.

A CHIRLA spokesperson told 17 News the organization hasn’t endorsed a candidate in the race for Valadao’s 21st District seat where he faces Democrat and Fresno businessman, T.J. Cox.

Valadao wasn’t at his home at the time of the protest, but his wife and children were.

Valadao issued a statement later saying in part:

“While we find ourselves in the midst of a polarizing political environment, I believe our country succeeds when we work together. One thing is clear: Aggressive behavior like that, demonstrated towards my family today, has no place in our political system.”
