UPDATE: Woman suspected of killing roommate at Bakersfield retirement community

UPDATE (7/12): The Housing Authority of the County of Kern, which runs the facility, issued the following statement Monday:

“It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of a resident at Pinewood Glen on Sunday. According to police, this was an instance of domestic violence. Pinewood Glen has a strict policy prohibiting weapons at the property.”


BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Police say a woman has been arrested in the death of her roommate at a Bakersfield retirement community.

In a statement, Bakersfield police said officers arrested Sandra Bonertz, 76, on suspicion of murder.

Officials said officers were called to Pinewood Glen Retirement Community at 2221 S. Real Road just after 9 a.m. They found a woman with severe injuries on the ground in a room.

Investigators said Bonertz was armed with the suspected murder weapon and admitted involvement in an assault.

According to police, investigators believe Bonertz killed the woman Saturday evening. She has been booked into jail and is due in court Tuesday, according to a Kern County inmate database.

The victim will be identified by the Kern County Coroner’s Office at a later time.
