Bakersfield continued a tradition of celebrating the achievements of employees who get the job done in spite of their disabilities.
The Hire Luncheon, in its 13th year, celebrates the success of those employees and encourages employers to hire them.
It brings local employers together with the Hire Committee a network dedicated to finding employment for people with disabilities.
Denise Crawford of the Hire Committee said it’s about knowing what they can do instead of what they can’t.
“We train our job seekers to advocate for themselves and to teach the employer ‘Even though I look disabled, I can do the job, I can do the job for you'” she said.
The late mayor Harvey Hall started the luncheon in 2005.
