Highway 46 to get federal funding for widening project

An area known as “Blood Alley” because of a high number of deadly collisions could soon need a new name

Congressman Kevin McCarthy announced the Department of Transportation approved a $17.5 million grant to widen a segment of Highway 46 from Interstate 5 west through the community of Lost Hills to Brown Material Road to four lanes.

The 33-mile stretch of roadway from Lost Hills west to the Kern County line has been called “Blood Alley” for years. It was once exclusively a two-lane highway.
