Thanks to a $35,000 grant, a Delano elementary school is promoting health and wellness on campus by building a sustainable garden.
Fremont Elementary School vice principal Janice Vargas applied for the grant. She says a large percentage of the student population suffers from obesity.
Community members came together over the weekend to prepare the garden boxes so students can begin planting seeds.
As a result of the grant, the school plans to have students commit to an hour of exercise, grow a garden and learn to create simple and nutritious recipes. The school also installed eight new filtered water dispensers so students cut back on sugary drinks.
