‘Freedom Writers’ teacher speaks to local educators

News

Local educators got a special opportunity to hear from an inspirational woman who made it her mission to teach kids deemed ‘unteachable.’

Erin Gruwell spoke to staff and faculty of the Kern High School District’s Workforce Academy Monday morning.

Gruwell is best known for her time at Woodrow High School in Long Beach where she encouraged students who lived a life surrounded by gangs. Her story made the big screen in “Freedom Writers” starring Hilary Swank.

She shared her experience to local educators, hoping to inspire them before they start another school year.

Gruwell started the Freedom Writers Foundation to ensure a quality of education for all students.
