Bakersfield’s first female mayor, Mary K. Shell, died Thursday at 91 years old from an undisclosed medical condition, her family confirmed.

Shell, a Republican leader, served as Bakersfield mayor from 1981-84 and then moved on to serve on the Kern County Board of Supervisors.

She was only the second woman to have served on the Kern County Board of Supervisors, where she represented the fifth district from 1985-1997.

Her death comes less than a month after the death of another prominent Bakersfield mayor, Harvey Hall, who died May 19 at 77 years old.
