Gusty winds created a challenge for firefighters in Northeast Bakersfield on Tuesday night.
About 20 city and county firefighters responded to a fire at a commercial building at around 8 p.m.
The building in the 2000 block of Haley Street between Height and Bernard streets.
It took crews about 15 minutes to knock down the flames.
Bakersfield Battalion Chief Matthew Perry said crews were able to keep the flames primarily on the first floor.
Arson investigators are looking into the cause of the fire and whether transients may have been inside when the fire began.
