Seven Kern County firefighters were injured this weekend after fighting local fires.
The injuries were heat-related and one firefighter is still in the hospital, Kern County Fire Chief Brian Marshall told supervisors at Tuesday’s meeting.
“It was quite the challenging day, I can tell you your Kern County firefighters worked until they dropped,” Marshall said. “Like I said one of them is still in the hospital today.”
Three devastating fires broke out in the Arvin area. The first fire killed about 50 animals, mostly goats and chickens, and another destroyed apartments. The third fire in the area broke out at a vacant grape vineyard.
In the same afternoon, a wildfire broke out in Lebec and a semi truck crashed, trapping the driver.
All of the fires remain under investigation.
The department is doing everything possible to keep crews safe and Chief Marshall says he is very proud of his firefighters.
