Firefighters responded to a warehouse on fire in Central Bakersfield.

When firefighters first arrived at the scene near the intersection of California and Union Avenues, they were responding to a reported grass fire, according to the Bakersfield Fire Department.

They later learned fire was also present in a nearby furniture warehouse.

It is not clear if the fire began in the nearby field and spread to the warehouse, or vice-versa, but officials offered safety tips for property owners to help avoid a similar situation.

“Make sure that your properties have defensible space,” Bakersfield Fire Department Public Information Officer John Frando said. “So, if this did start off as a vegetation fire, there probably wasn’t proper clearance between the vegetation and the structure, which allowed that vegetation fire to reach the commercial buildings and spread to the interior.”

No injuries were reported.

No official estimate has been released on the cost of damages.
