A female corrections officer is suing the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation accusing it of gender discrimination after breaking up a fight while pregnant and losing her baby.
The attorney representing Sarah Coogle says the the fight happened at California Corrctional Institution in Tehachapi in December 2016.
CCI is also referred to as Tehachapi Prison. The prison is just west of the city and has a capacity of 2,783.
Coogle’s attorney says she was assigned to an all-male super maximum prison while pregnant. They argue she was forced to choose between her career and her family — a decision they say no man would have to make.
They say Coogle requested a less strenuous position but was denied. She lost her baby after breaking up a fight.
Coogle’s lawsuit seeks unspecified damages.
