Educating kids and parents at Water Safety Day

News

Local children will have a chance to learn both water and fire safety tips Sunday at the American Kids Sports Center

Water Safety Day is scheduled for 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the center at 3622 Allen Road in Northwest Bakersfield.

Safety professionals will be on hand to educate children on proper swimming procedures in an effort to reduce the risk of drownings, while firefighters discuss fire and smoke safety, according to organizers.

The event is free and open to the public.

In addition to safety demonstrations, the event will also feature face painting, bounce houses, games, and snow cones, organizers said.

Parents will have access to informational booths about swim lessons, pool fences, how to properly wear life vests. Information will also be distributed about how to make homes and vacations “water safe,” AKSC said.

Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in children ages 1-4, and the second leading cause of accidental death in children ages 5-14, according to AKSC.
