DUI: Driver in deadly crash on Panama Lane suspected of driving under the influence

The driver of a car involved in a fatal crash earlier this week is suspected of driving under the influence.

Cristian Avalos, 24, of Delano, was arrested and booked into the Kern County Jail for felony Driving Under the Influence and Murder, according to Bakersfield Police Department.

The crash happened on Monday at 12:00 a.m.

Bakersfield police report Avalos and another man were in a black car driving east on Panama Lane when it entered the northbound off-ramp of Highway 99, hitting a white sedan carrying an additional two men.

One man inside the white vehicle, identified as 28-year-old Pablo Villareal, of Shafter, died at the scene. The other was taken to an area hospital with major, critical injuries.

Avalos and his passenger sustained minor injuries.

A search in the Kern County Superior Court website, shows Avalos has a previous misdemeanor DUI charge from 2013.
