Downtown Bakersfield thrift store vandalism investigated as hate crime

Vandalism at a Downtown Bakersfield shop that included spray-painted homophobic slurs is now being investigated as a hate crime and police released photos of a suspect.

The vandalism happened at the In Your Wildest Dreams thrift store in the early morning hours of New Year’s Day.

The shop is located at 19th and Q streets.

Police said the man in the surveillance video images spray painted the slurs in front the business.

The shop owners told 17’s Amber Frias, their the shop has been vandalized several times since September. The owners believe the suspect in Tuesday’s crime also vandalized the storefront in November.

The man is described as being between 35 and 40 years old, standing 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighing 200 pounds. He was wearing blue jeans, a navy blue sweatshirt with white writing and black shoes.

Anyone with information on the identity of the suspect is asked to call the Bakersfield police department at 327-7111.
