DELANO, Calif. (KGET) — A correctional officer at Kern Valley State Prison shot and wounded an inmate to stop an attack against another inmate Monday morning, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
The incident occurred at about 10:46 a.m. when four inmates at the Delano prison attacked another inmate with stabbing weapons on the Facility B yard, a CDCR news release said. Officers gave multiple commands for the attackers to stop. They used chemical agents and less-lethal weapons.
The attack continued.
An officer then fired one round from a rifle and wounded an attacker, the release said. Three inmates, including the victim of the attack, were taken to area hospitals. Their condition is unknown.
No staff injuries were reported.
An investigation is ongoing.
Kern Valley State Prison houses more than 3,700 inmates.
