Delano police officers handed out turkeys Monday after a call out to the community to donate to needy families.
Delano Police Chief Robert Nevarez said it’s a way for residents and officers to see one another under less stressful circumstances.
“Generally when we get called to addresses, it’s under negative circumstances,” Nevarez said.
“People are upset, perhaps they’re angry, something bad happened in their lives. This is an opportunity for officers to go out under very positive circumstances and interact with people and I think that’s good for members of the community.”
This is Chief Nevarez’s fifth month on the job in Delano.
He says Monday’s event is all part of building a foundation with the community.
