Delano mayor Grace Vallejo announced Wednesday she is running for the District 4 Supervisor seat against incumbent David Couch, after district lines were redrawn due to a lawsuit from the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund.
That redistricting turned District 4 into a Latino majority, inspiring a group of prominent Latino community leaders to band together in backing Mayor Vallejo in her run against Couch.
Vallejo made the announcement at 1 p.m. in front of the Liberty Bell in Downtown Bakersfield, praising MALDEF for its lawsuit, and saying it was now the community’s turn to continue the organization’s work.
“They’re going to pass the baton to us,” Vallejo said. “We cannot drop it. We have to become so unified hat no one can break us.”
Supervisor Leticia Perez, former Supervisor Pete Parra, and Sen. Dean Florez were among the leaders attending the announcement.
