An investigation is underway after a decomposing body was found in a column outside a grocery store in Lancaster.
The manager of the Winco called a repairman Saturday afternoon due to a strong smell from the column, thinking it was some type of sewer leak, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office.
The handyman and plumber began removing bricks and discovered a shoe and a leg inside the column.
The body was decomposing and the person’s gender is unknown at this time, according to deputies. Investigators say however, they believe it may be the body of a man who escaped from a traffic stop on Monday night.
“So he may have gotten inside there, and somehow gotten down the column trying to hide from the deputies, and then couldn’t get out,” said Lt. John Corina. “So it definitely is a strange, new one on me, and we’ll see if that’s the case.”
The driver was pulled over for a fake license plate, crashed the car, escaped onto the store’s roof before disappearing.
