BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — KCSO has identified the man who died as 27-year-old Darrin Freeman of Bakersfield.

Sheriff’s office investigators said one man is dead following an apparent gun battle between a store clerk and would-be robbers Wednesday evening at an East Bakersfield market.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to N & H Market at 1230 Pearl St. for a report of an armed robbery just before 6 p.m.

According to the sheriff’s office, three armed men entered the market and demanded money from a clerk. Officials said at least one store employee exhanged gunfire with the three suspects, striking and killing one of them.

The man’s body was found lying in the parking lot with a gunshot wound to his neck. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The two other suspects fled from the scene. It’s unclear if the two others were struck by gunfire.

The investigation is ongoing.
