UPDATE 6/18: The victim was identified by the coroner as 40-year-old Billy Anthony Avila. His cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds. Suspects Angel Cordero, 25, and Jerry Ortega, 20, have both pleaded not guilty to murder and other charges. A third defendant, 45-year-old Sabino Ramos, was accused of acting as an accessory, but court records show he has only pleaded guilty to a parole violation and is not listed as a defendant in Cordero and Ortega’s case.


UPDATE (9:26 a.m.): A man was killed in a shooting near the Hampton Inn, according to BPD.

The department said at around 7:35 a.m., officers were sent to the area after receiving reports of a shooting in progress. When officers arrived, they found a man who had suffered gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other shooting victims were found, BPD said.

There is no suspect information at this time. The department said it is not currently searching for a vehicle in connection with the shooting.

At this time, BPD said it is unclear if the victim was staying at the Hampton Inn. The hotel was not placed on lockdown because of the shooting.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Bakersfield Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting near the Hampton Inn in the area of Oak Street and California Avenue. 

The incident happened at around 7:38 a.m., according to PulsePoint. No additional information has been released at this time.
