BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The arraignment of a man charged with murder in connection with a stabbing near Mill Creek Park was postponed one week for the Public Defender’s office to check conflicts of interest.

Terry William Turpin, 44, is accused of killing 37-year-old Jarred Charles Heilman.

Officers were dispatched at about 8:35 p.m. May 23 to a report of fighting and screaming coming from the area of Harrier Way and Lewis Puller Drive, along the west side of Mill Creek Canal, police said.

Officers found Heilman, who had been stabbed, according to police and coroner’s reports. He was taken to Kern Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Several hours later, officers located and detained Turpin. Police said they interviewed him and linked him to the killing.

Turpin is held on $1 million bail and set to be arraigned June 5.
