June is recognized as Elder Abuse Awareness Month, and locally, officials say thousands of seniors are abused without it ever being reported.

According to Kern County Adult and Aging Services, 4,000 cases of elder abuse were reported last year to Adult Protective Services, but county officials say for every reported case, an estimated 24 go unheard.

Kern Behavioral Health is holding a conference Thursday to delve deeper into the topic.

You can call 911 to report abuse in an emergency, and you can call Protective Services’ 24-hour hotline at 661-868-1006.
