Corrections officer found guilty of killing co-worker in love triangle sentenced

News
A judge sentenced Rigoberto Sanchez, 41, to 80 years in prison for killing his coworker in a love triangle gone wrong.

Sanchez was found guilty of first-degree murder in the death of 31-year-old Edwin Lima in May 2017 at his estranged wife’s apartment located on Valleyview Drive in Northeast Bakersfield. All three worked at the prison in Tehachapi.

Sanchez’s attorney argued Lima pointed his own gun at his client, and that Sanchez shot Lima in self-defense.  But Sanchez’s wife Sandra testified that Lima never had the chance to draw the gun.

Rigobetero was found guilty on all five charges: first-degree murder, attempted murder, shooting inside a home where people reside, assault with a firearm and first-degree burglary.

Sanchez was on the run when he was arrested in Mexico nearly a month after the shooting.
