Coroner identifies man killed in Maricopa Highway crash

UPDATE (6 p.m.): The Kern County Coroner’s Office has identified a man that died in collision on Highway 166. The coroner said 47-year-old Kenny Robbins died of his injuries at the scene.

Previous story:

This morning at about 4:45 a.m. a fatal accident involving a pickup truck and a semi-truck trailer happened between Basic School Road and Old River on Highway 166.

According to the California Highway Patrol the driver of the pickup truck collided into the trailer which was blocking all lanes of Highway 166, a 47 year old man out of Maricopa, died on impact while the passenger Jacob Johnson, 25, out of Taft was taken to KMC with minor to moderate injuries.

About 15-20 minutes before the accident the semi truck was headed westbound making a U-turn when one of the air hoses to the trailer became disconnect causing the trailer to lock its breaks, which does so for safety precautions.

When the trailer was stopped it was blocking all lanes. The driver of the semi truck put out cones and reflective triangles to deflect traffic to the shoulder.

At that time, a pickup truck traveling eastbound did not see the driver trying to deflect traffic and slammed into the trailer, causing the fatality.

CHP said the driver of the semi truck was making a legal U-turn and not making any moving violations. Commercial vehicle experts were called to the scene to determine why the airline became disconnected.

As of now all lanes of Highway 166 are reopened.
