Coroner: August apartment fire death accidental

The Kern County coroner identified the woman killed in an apartment fire in North Bakersfield.
The coroner ruled 60-year-old Billie Ruth Owen’s death an accident. 
Bakersfield Fire Department received reports of a fire around 10:45 p.m. Aug. 24, at an apartment complex located at 631 33rd Street, near Q Street, in North Bakersfield.
After extinguishing the fire, officials located Owen’s body, according to BPD. At the time, the death was being investigated as suspicious, police said.
The coroner determined Owen died of smoke inhalation and burns. The Bakersfield Fire Department said smoke detectors in the apartment were working at the time.
Three families were also displaced and Red Cross was called to assist them, according to officials.
The fire department continues to investigate the cause of the fire.
