Get ready to enjoy micro-breweries and distilleries in Downtown Bakersfield.

The Bakersfield City Council raised a glass tonight to a new ordinance that allows breweries to operate in commercial zones.

Previously, they were only allowed in industrial zones.

“This is a big step forward for Downtown,” councilman Andrae Gonzalez said.

“Research shows that microbreweries and distilleries have been great economic engines for neighborhoods throughout cities across the country, so we’re excited that now, entrepreneurs who would like to open a micro-brewery or distillery in Downtown will have that opportunity by right.”

That means those mirco-breweries won’t have to go through a conditional use permit process.

Councilman Gonzales says he’s already in talks with a business owner who wants to open a microbrewery and distillery near the Padre Hotel.
