Cardi B Elementary? Just one of the names suggested for new school in Southeast Bakersfield

The Bakersfield City School District will announce the name of a new elementary school on Thursday from an eclectic list of local, international and historic public figures.

The 48 names on the list included nods to Bakersfield’s and the district’s history with names like Earl Warren, City of Bakersfield founder Colonel Thomas Baker, Harvey Hall and former BCSD principals like Caren Floyd and Jerry Tate.

Naming the school after Bakersfield veteran and Medal of Honor recipient Leonard L. Alvarado is also a possibility.

But some of those making the cut for possible names of the school near Cottonwood Road and Belle Terrace were a bit more contemporary.

Two suggested names come from the world of entertainment: Singer Cardi B and Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott. The list of names released by the school board only says the names were suggested by BCSD students.

In possibly striking both notes — keeping the name local and contemporary — would be naming the school after former BCSD student and Grammy-winner Gregory Porter. Porter has performed across the world and recently performed at Cal State Bakersfield.

The majority of the suggested names are of local figures like former students, and other historic Bakersfield figures, including Chief Eric Matlock who was Bakersfield’s first African-American police chief and children’s book author Pam Munoz Ryan.

And if the list wasn’t expansive enough, the list also includes former President Barack Obama and current President Donald Trump.

The board is expected to announce the name during Thursday’s board meeting.
