A California City man pleaded no contest to murder charges for the death of a toddler.

Matthew Berry was arrested in 2013 after 2-year-old Pharoah Van Vactor was found dead from blunt force trauma.

Berry originally pleaded not guilty and told detectives he and the toddler were off-roading in the desert when the boy hit his head on the dashboard.

Investigators, however, believed the boy had been beaten.

Berry will serve 25 years to life in prison.
