BPD officer opens fire following armed robbery, 2 suspects hospitalized

Update 8 a.m. Two men who matched the description of the robbery suspects were arrested at a local hospital around 9:30 p.m. Thursday night. Both men have moderate injuries that do not appear to be life threatening.

The scene may still have a police presence in the area of South Chester Avenue and Planz Road on Friday morning.  

The officer involved is on routine administrative leave pending review by the critical incident review board. 

Bakersfield police confirmed officers are investigating an officer-involved shooting and armed robbery in the 700 block of Planz Road.

Officials said an armed robbery occurred at the La Villa restaurant on Planz just after 9 p.m. Thursday.

A police spokesperson said an officer on patrol in the area responded and opened fire outside the restaurant. Officials said two suspects were later found at a nearby hospial with gunshot wounds.

No officers or others were reported wounded by gunfire.

The investigation is expected to continue into the early morning hours of Friday. The intersection at South Chester and Planz Road remains blocked off to traffic. Avoid the area if possible.
