Boys and Girls Club tears down house across from center for kids’ safety

News

The Boys and Girls Club wants make its East Bakersfield center a safer place and tore down a building to do it.

The club demolished a building off Niles Street near the Armstrong Youth Center.

The clubs said they’ve had trouble with illegal activity happening here in the past.

Director of Development Heather Frank says it’s been an ongoing safety issue.

“This is a part of town we need to be in. We’re proud to have our Niles location situated here we’re just doing continued efforts to make sure our kids have a free safe place to play and be kids,” she said.

With the building gone, the plan is to try to close off the alley from the public and build a new center for its teen workforce development program.

The club purchased the building with the help of the Kevin Harvick and Wheeler foundations.
