Former world champion boxer Sugar Ray Leonard was in Bakersfield on Tuesday, along with sports announcer Greg Gumbel, for an evening with the Boys and Girls Club of Kern County.
Leonard is a member of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America Alumni Hall of Fame.
He was the keynote speaker at the annual “An Evening With” at the Kern County Fairgrounds and delivered an important message.
“I always tell people, kids in particular, to dream the dream and don’t let anyone deter you from your dreams,” he said. “Only you can make those dreams happen.”
Leonard was 7 years old when he joined the Boys Clubs of Washington.
It’s where he first put on boxing gloves, before becoming one of the greatest boxers of all-time, winning Olympic gold.
