BNSF railroad officer mistakenly shoots, kills K-9 partner

News

A BNSF officer mistakenly shot and killed his K-9 partner while out on patrol Thursday night, railroad officials said.

A BNSF spokesperson said the shooting happened at around 8 p.m. near Bena and Neumarkel roads.

According to the railroad company, the officer was on patrol without the K-9 named Defender. While on patrol, the officer thought he came across a coyote and shot at it not knowing it was his K-9 partner.

Defender got out of the officer’s patrol car without the officer knowing.

A BNSF spokesperson said it was an unfortunate accident and that the company is mourning Defender’s death.

The shooting is under investigation.
