Bonnie Doyle and Diane Smith are members of the Bakersfield Doll Club and the stories behind their collections are fascinating.
For Smith, it’s an 80-year-old hobby that continues to grow. She owns hundreds of dolls– some dating back to the 1730s.
Doyle is considered a “new” doll collector because her dolls are from the 1950s to present.
It’s a hobby that tells a story– a tale of beauty, creativity, nostalgia, childhood and social history.
“I think as far as technology is concerned– great,” Smith said. “But children need to pretend, to imagine and to play and you can’t do that on an electronic device.”
The Bakersfield Doll Club meets once a month. Each meeting has a theme and showcases dolls in a historical discussion about the past.
