A 4-month-old child who died in September was the victim of homicide, an autopsy has ruled.
The victim’s name was Landon Helmick.
He was discovered not breathing at about 10:20 p.m. on Sept. 30 in a home in the 1900 block of South J Street, according a release Friday afternoon by the Kern County Coroner’s office.
“He was transported by ambulance to Mercy Hospital, where he died,” the coroner’s office said. “A postmortem examination was conducted and the cause of death was smothering and the manner was homicide.”
Landon was one of identical twins.
The mother of the boys tells 17’s Olivia LaVoice, she can’t say much while the death of her baby is still under investigation, but she says she was not with her babies when the death occurred.
The Kern County Sheriff’s Office said a person of interest in the case has been identified and has been interviewed.
Anyone with more information on the case is urged to call the Kern County Sheriff’s Office at 861-3110 or the Secret Witness Hotline at 322-4040.
